With my resolution from last year to play every system I own falling just shy in the home straight I will attempt to complete it this month. I only have Epic: Armageddon and Dystopian Wars left and both games have seen a resurgence in popularity locally. I possibly bit off slightly more than I could chew last year and was trying to juggle too many hobby things with wedding plans that always seemed to fall on a weekend. Despite this I managed to play a fair few games, attended 2 big tournaments for Malifaux, ran 2 large convention tournaments for Malifaux and got some more new blood into the hobby.

I had a blast playing some of my games that have been neglected, especially breaking out my Panzer Grenadiers for Secrets of the Third Reich, running them with some mecha units and Nazi werewolves. Who doesn’t love Nazi werewolves? With the rumours doing the rounds of a 2nd edition to SoTR using Kickstarter I have some hobby funds labelled for adding drop troops to my Panzer Grenadiers.

I also managed to get a game of Warmachine/Hordes in using my old Cryx forces. I love some of the aesthetics of the forces and absolutely adore my Circle Orboros models but I find this game a little too much of a learning curve for me to invest heavily in. I will continue to paint what I have, pick up a model here and there and throw down some dice when the mood takes me or a game is offered.

Epic has recently seen a rise in participation in 2 local game clubs which just sends me giddy with excitement. Epic/Space Marine was the first wargame I ever collected and I still remember my first purchase of the Epic Chaos Horde box, having no idea about the game the tiny miniatures just appealed to me. This year I will be starting 2 forces and will be gaming with them every chance I get.

Guildball will shortly be landing on the doorstep and as I backed it heavily (my largest kickstarter pledge) I will be getting some games of this organised. This definitely looks like a beer and pretzels game and hopefully the price point won’t immediatley put people off. The models are beautiful and the gameplay is fast, furious and fun.

So where does that leave me for this year. Well, as the title suggests I am going to try and get as many games in as possible this year. I will continue with Malifaux in a big way, the Bushido boardgame will be arriving later in the year and Epic and Dystopian Wars will see more tabletop time. So my resolutions are:

  1. Achieve the Rainbow award on Malifaux Rankings (Play all 7 factions in tournaments) Having collected so many models it doesn’t bear thinking about I want to use all of them this year.
  2. Play at least 1 game a week – This will include new and old games, as a side note I would like to try as many new games (wargame and boardgame) as I can
  3. Paint 2 3,000 point Epic forces – This will be good to paint up my existing forces and have more armies for other gamers to choose from.

So that’s it. These resolutions should be achievable and I have already started by painting some Epic and playing a game of Zombicide yesterday. Here’s to the rest of the year!

So eventually it happens to all of us. We fall off the wagon. It all starts with good intentions. In this case I would only play 1 faction. Then I need a second to demo to other people and spread the love of Malifaux. So Ressers gave way to Guild Hunters. And so it stayed increasing model counts for both factions. And then Storm of Shadows hit and my love of Mei Feng flared.

Mei Feng in case you don’t know is a Dual Faction Master. What does this mean? Well, it doubles my playable Factions! #M2E came along and with it new artwork and something just whispered in my ear…Neverborn! Lilith had new plastics, the Nephilim got a much needed facelift and I had somehow already picked up a Zoraida and Misaki who in between editions went from Mercenary to Master of the Ten Thunders and another Dual Faction Master.

So this brings my playable faction count up to 6 which leaves 1 faction out. Some argue that they are not a real faction at all but with #M2E the Gremlins have somehow split and formed a faction by themselves. The Bayou is their home.

Along with other models in the Malifaux range the Gremlins have gotten an update to their look with the new plastics while still maintaining their aesthetic. And this is where #ProjectBrown comes in.

So far we have Somer Teeth Jones, the Bayou Boss, 2 warpigs and a rooster rider along with 2 skeeters, Lenny, 4 gremlins and 2 slop haulers. Along with Somer, Zoraida has become Dual Faction and has taken her place as the Mistress of the Swamps. Which ties in with her swamp fiends, the Silurids, the Waldgesists and Bad Juju all of which were in my Neverborn collection.

So what does this all mean? Well any given day I can play any of the 7 factions with at least 2 masters for each faction. Oh dear. I think I need help.

So after a frentic few weeks getting the last models I needed ready for the Malifaux UK GT #M2GT it seems a bit of a lull now. But not for long as we have Nordicon 3 – the 3rd Nordicon to look forward to. And this time I get to play! Trophies are already purchased, prize pool is being collected and this weekend I will attempt to design some counters to give as goodie bag support.

In the lead up to #M2GT I managed to paint:

2 Samurai
2 Tengu
Dawn Serpent
Shadow Effigy

Now, granted they are not all finished but are at least base coloured and look respectable on the tabletop. Will have to see how far that takes me to completing my New Year’s Resolution.

Added to all this in the background I have started #ProjectBrown – the bayou project. With 2 masters for Gremlins now I thought I really should get the models assembled and painted and prepare to play a few games.

With some more superb artwork Wyrd has left me wanting more and more. If this is Shenlong and the High River Monks then Sensei Yu was nothing like how I thought.

The guys at Guildball have shown more progress work on their renders for the Fishermen. Ladies and Gentlemen… Siren!

Recently I have had to rearrange all my toys and downsize to co-habitation with my future missus. This means that my vast array of toys in my 3 bedroon gamer’s paradise has had to be sold, sorted and re-stored in a much smaller area.

I have discovered many an old collection of models, from Thousand Sons Terminators converted from regular plastic terminators to Flames of War Panzergrenadiers and tanks half built lying around in shoe boxes. I had a large amount of Forgeworld resin miniatures for Epic:Armageddon that managed to get whittled down significantly on eBay but still I have 4 full races to play with sitting in boxes.

So this has led me to question my storage options and possible solutions. Over the years I have used almost exclusively Games Workshop’s cases and, while suitable for the task, were never very inspiring. Yes, they do come in a range of colours and in 2 different sizes (small and large) and they have since the creation of Apocalypse come out with a giant version.

Like most gamers I like to sort my collections into meaningful sections – all my Bushido models together, my Epic:Armageddon Chaos needs a tray to themselves etc and it’s just a nice warm feeling inside to open a case, look through the painted models all arranged in a nice and complete set. So let’s see what options are out there for a gamer like me:

Life through a Lens – Part 2

My lenses arrived yesterday and even with questionable translations instructions on the packet I was able to get it attached.

Basically it boils down to:

  1. Take sticky wrapper off metallic ring and stick to phone
  2. Attach lens of choice

I think IKEA could do with these concise instructions. My only issue was that the metallic ring covers the flash on the phone. That was when I realised why they supplied different backing rings, including one with a slice cut out to accommodate the flash on an iPhone. These guys think of everything!

Anyway, the results. Given that I am under pressure to get a lot of models finished for this weekend I took a quick shot of a WIP Governor’s Proxy/Scribe for Malifaux.

Life through a lens – Part 1

At the weekend I was introduced to a lovely gadget that will be of great benefit to me when it comes to miniature photography – iPhone camera lenses (other devices are available). The package comes with 3 lenses (Macro, Wide Angle and Fish Eye) but it is the Macro that really interests me.

As I have my phone on me at all times and I take an extensive amount of pictures with it when gaming and even when painting I think it will of great benefit. The camera is pretty good quality (for a phone, it’s a phone first and foremost) but zooming in has always been an issue.

Combining this little gadget with the Foldio Kickstarter I backed recently gives me a nice portable studio. An extra piece to the set would be a phone-specific tripod to mount it on for great pictures. And lo and behold a quick ebay search reveals 1 of these too!

I have ordered the lenses and will hopefully trial out this weekend coming at the next tournament – Paddyfaux. Come back and read the review!
